How do you feel about Pluto's recent demotion? Should it still be a planet?

If it's no longer a planet, then what is it? A space rock? I'm confused, I missed this one....didn't know Pluto had been demoted. What am I supposed to do with the astronomy mnemonic I learned in grade school?

My Very Energetic Mother Just Sold Nine PIzza Pies.

Actually, I always thought the Pizza Pies thing sounded weird. Who referes to a large pizza as a pizza pie any way. It sounds better to end the sentance at PIzza any way.

My Very Energetic Mother Just Sold Nine Pizza's....am I right, or am I right with this one?!

Today is the most important day of the new school year, at least in my building. It's the day administrators, support staff, and custodians return. It's the day I take donuts.

I'm their favorite!
23rd-Jul-2008 12:03 pm - Collection of random comments...
Ack! I burned my tongue on my lasagna!

I've been making my family tree on Ancestry.com. It's fun, but also hard cause I don't know any names pre-grandparents. So it's hard to find the right people. Not so much with my paternal side cause that name is just way too rare. But my maternal side, I have issues.

I should start adding tags to my LJ entries. That would be cool.

I made a countdown calendar for the house buying. It's fun to "X" off another day.

MySpace is unfortunate, in that just about everyone has one. That means people that you would like to friend and those that you'd rather not. The latter keep finding me.

There is a totally burned bit in the bottom of my lasagna... I'm contemplating eating it anyway... nah, on closer inspection it looks really gross.

I got some of those Babybel cheese snacks. They are tasty.

Thanks for joining me for all the random thoughts that I have had this morning.

O.k., if you didn't already know this about me, then you should know now that I love to dance or at the very least watch other people dance. Happy dancing TOTALLY ROCKS and this is an EXCELLENT example that gives me goosebumps to watch...enjoy!

I have no errands to run today, I've completed what housework needed to be done, Meghan's birthday invitations have been mailed out, and nothing else needs to be done in that arena until much closer to the party.

In other words: I have nothing to do but enjoy the rest of the day and do whatever I want!

23rd-Jul-2008 12:49 pm - Another Fic Question Regarding Ratings

This is mostly about sex, but if you put in violence, that's fine too.  Usually, when I write the smut, I just slap an NC-17 rating on it and be done, but I'm writing in some communities that will only accept an R rating, so my question is:  What is the difference between R and NC-17?  And by that, I mean, what specifically would send it over the edge for you and make it an NC-17 rating?  Is it a certain word, certain dialogue, certain position, body part, placed to have sex, etc.?  I think you guys know what I mean - you're not exactly subtle on the smut.  I just want to be able to write what I want for the story, but keep it at an R.  HELP!

23rd-Jul-2008 11:23 am - What to watch?
Jose G. helped me with a few Comedy Central updates like new shows such as The Gong Show and Reality Bites Back.  Those are full of lulz.  The 3rd season of Mind of Mencia is a bit of a disappointment compared to the 1st and 2nd season.  Scrubs is still one of my favorite series besides The Office.  One of my peeps, I think it was Chris) recommended me to watch Heroes but I still haven't had time.  My mom is curious with the Desperate Housewives series but they're so many seasons that I don't know when to start downloading.

Then there's anime.  No matter how cool the anime is, I NEVER keep track of it and get lost.  It happened with Gintama, Guren Lagan, Gundam, Reborn, and a few other anime.   Currently I'm into Soul Eater and Lelouch of the Rebellion.   Let's hope to not loose track of those because they're awesome!

On an off-topic side, Cammie from batsu made me a rough translation of the Die's recent entry of Diru's FC magazine.  The conclusion of the entry is that he loves his guitar so much to compare it like a girlfriend, lol. And he's lacking inspiration for a new hairstyle giving that the reason why his hair is long and not dyed.  (He should for red or black hair, not strawberry blond.)

Yesterday I downloaded Batman:  Gotham Knight, Shin Wars, and Season 1 from Crayon Shin Chan (Funimation version).  Today I checked how it turned out and the Batman movie seemed to be the wrong torrent, bummer.  At least I Shin Wars was complete while Season 1 was still like at 40% downloading.  So the point is... I watched Shin Wars and you should watch it if you love Star Wars parodies.  Here goes a short review:

23rd-Jul-2008 11:01 am - isn't life funny?
Yeah, so they already switched me from teaching comp to teaching lit. HAHAHAHA. OMG.

So that means I need to create a brand new syllabus! Full of new syllabus-ness! And lit!

Sigh.

Sigh, sigh, sigh, sigh, sigh.

I am but a pawn of the man.

Anyway, expect some posts of narrowing-down-my-book-choices soon. I think I'm going to do the lit quality class again just with different books.

Oh, and now instead of teaching first thing in the morning (8:30), I'm teaching after lunch (12:50). IT IS ALMOST FUNNY.

Sigh. That's OK. I am prepared for this type of thing. I can roll with the punches.

It should be a planet still, as it did for 70ish years, because planets can be in every size.

You are allowed to place three items from your lifetime into a box that will be opened in fifty years. What do you put in, and why?

1. My collection of paper journals & diaries. Or better yet, get at least a dozen or more people to contribute journal entries that can be combined into a single book which shares not just my life but others from this time frame as well. Why? Because it's something I would want to find. I love reading journals, published or not, as well as historical letters. They show how things can change but that the concerns & fixations of the mind - the heart of things that matter - remain constant.

2. If I'm the one who gets to open the box, I would like there to be a letter to myself about what my life is like at this very moment, how I feel about it, where I am & what I'm doing as well as I what I hope for my life to be like fifty years from now (at the age of 80!) - ask myself in that letter if I managed to do anything I wanted to do, and if I hadn't, to do as many of those things a.s.a.p., no excuses. Why? I should have done this years ago, honestly. & imagine being able to read it, look back and recall all that I likely would have forgotten? All the things I thought so important, so dreadfully hard, put behind me.

3. Photographs of various places, things & people. Why? In 30 years I would hope that the photograph will still have the curious charm and intrigue that ones from 50 years or more ago do today. It would be interesting to see just how much has (visually) changed, what will still exist or have passed away.

Because the first two points are quite similiar, I'm adding a fourth one.

4. All of my top favourite songs on an ipod shuffle in the hopes that this, by then, ancient device will still be playable. Why? I love a variety of music - some I discovered on my own and much that was shared - and it would be something to listen to while looking through old photographs and pages of writings.
23rd-Jul-2008 10:03 am - huh. interesting.
I got home yesterday and there was a message from the secretary in my department on my answering machine. They have a lit class for me to teach this fall. Which is nice! Except it would take me out of the UWP, and I really, really, really want to mentor this spring. I do not think backing out of teaching comp this fall will allow me to mentor next fall since the UWP guy was all, "If you teach comp this fall, you can definitely mentor in the spring." (See how that works?) Anyway, the secretary isn't in her office, so I left her a message, and hopefully she'll get back to me before the end of the day. I didn't say no on the phone because I want to hear what they're offering me (in terms of time of day, etc., and whether or not I have the option to decline--I went to our scheduling guy at the beginning of the summer and told him I wanted out of the UWP since I wasn't teaching the class I wanted to over there).

Really, the reason I don't want to switch (besides the mentoring thing, which is HUGE) is that it took me 902430354354 years to figure out the syllabus for that class and it was a LOT of work. Also, I'm teaching first thing in the morning like I wanted. Plus, that syllabus was hard!

So we'll see.
23rd-Jul-2008 07:01 am - Recipes: sour cream whipped cream, and salade nicoise
A recipe for sour cream-whipped cream, from the SF Chronicle Food Section of today:

Whipped Sweet & Sour Cream
Makes 4 cups

1 cup heavy cream, chilled
1 cup low-fat sour cream, chilled
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon liqueur, such as Peach Schnapps, Grand Marnier or other liqueur, optional

Instructions: In a mixing bowl with electric mixer, beat heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add sour cream, powdered sugar, vanilla and liqueur, if using. Continue beating on high until soft peaks form. Cover and refrigerate until serving, or overnight, if desired.

Per tablespoon: 20 calories, 0 protein, 1 g carbohydrate, 2 g fat (1 g saturated), 6 mg cholesterol, 4 mg sodium, 0 fiber.

There. Doesn't that sound good?
********************************************

Salade Nicoise
Serves 4-6

In Nice this salad would be a first course, but made in a big bowl in the California summertime, it is all I want to eat. A few cooked or marinated artichoke hearts could be added, along with some cooked or raw young favas, a few slices of cucumber, and even a scattering of capers or diced preserved Moroccan lemon. You can strew your salad with an array of the season's finest as well.

The salad:
8 small potatoes (though waxy white fleshed potatoes are classic, I have taken a passion to a selection of potato: white flesh (either white or red skin), yellow flesh (such as Yukon gold) and blue)
8 to 12 ounces young fresh green beans (preferably haricots verts, the very thin green beans), trimmed and cut into 2-inch lengths
2 to 3 large fresh beets, or 1 package vacuum-packed cooked beets (see Note)
1 head lettuce such as romaine, butter, oakleaf, or other crunchy, fresh variety
2 cups arugula leaves
2 ripe heirloom tomatoes, cut into wedges
1 small to medium red onion, peeled and cut crosswise into thin rings
4 hard-cooked eggs, shelled and cut into halves
1 red bell pepper, cut into thin rings
1 green bell pepper, cut into thin rings
1/2 cup black Mediterranean olives, unpitted, preferably Nicoise, or oil-cured black olives
2 cans solid white tuna (10 ounces total) such as Ortiz brand or other olive oil-packed jarred tuna from Spain, Italy or Peru
-- About 2 tablespoons chopped chives
-- About 2 tablespoons chopped parsley or chervil (optional)
-- Several sprigs of sweet basil, thinly sliced
The dressing:
3 cloves garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
-- Juice of 1 1/2 large lemons
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
-- About 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
-- Freshly ground black pepper
For the salad: Place the potatoes in a medium saucepan; cover with water and bring to boil. Cook 10-15 or until tender. Drain and cool; when cool enough to handle, peel. Set aside.

Blanch the green beans in boiling water for 1 minute (30 seconds if using haricots verts), then drain and toss with ice cubes or run under cold water.

Steam or roast the beets: Place the cleaned, unpeeled beets in a steamer with water at the bottom, or in a baking pan, covered. If steaming, cook for about 30 minutes, checking the water to be sure it doesn't evaporate and burn the pan. Small beets will cook much more quickly. If roasting, pour a cup or so of water or red wine or cranberry juice into the pan then cover with a piece of foil. Bake at 350° for about 40 minutes; again, test every so often for tenderness, exact timing will depend upon size and age of beet roots. Peel and cut into wedges when cool.

Place all the cooked vegetables in separate bowls. Wash and dry the lettuce, combine with the arugula. Place in bowl. Prepare garnishes and arrange them on a nearby plate/plates for easy access when you put the salad together. Drain the tuna; if the oil is strong, blot the fish with absorbent paper towel.

For the dressing: In a small bowl, combine the garlic, mustard, lemon, and vinegar, then whisk in the olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

To serve: Add a spoonful or two of dressing to each of the vegetables in separate bowls.

Combine the lettuce and arugula and toss lightly with a tablespoon or two, to taste, of the remaining dressing, then arrange in a bowl or in individual bowls.

Arrange, on top, the potatoes, green beans, beets, tomatoes, onion, egg, peppers, olives and tuna in a pleasing way, either in rows or mounds, as desired, then drizzle with the remaining dressing and sprinkle with the herbs.

Serve immediately.
23rd-Jul-2008 07:36 am - CICADAS!111!!!! SHIT!!
If I ever had but one nemesis in life, it would be simply thus: Cicadas.

Why do these things even exist? All they do is breed and fornicate and do that deafening "chirp" that they think is so damn cute. It's NOT.

I don't like cicadas. At all. They give me palpitations and I put them up very high on my list of Irrational Fears and/or Dislikes along with needles, socks, and bathroom fuzz. And unfortunately in east Tennessee, I've heard they were in full goddamn bloom.

Whatever. Let the bastards stay up there right? As long as they aren't fucking on my territory I'm fine. Oh but I wouldn't be writing this entry at all if, in fact, something had not gone HORRIBLY WRONG.

So tl;dc I might have seen some rather large cicadas, and I might have almost passed out on the porch. That's it.
23rd-Jul-2008 08:23 am - OH THE HUMANITY!

Wow, i found this on the web last night.
I found this place the 2nd time i went to Comic Con. i've never seen Top Gun so i had no real point of reference.
But i liked the BBQ and the divey atmosphere.
The place was right next to the train tracks, so they had this drink special.
Anytime a Boxcar caravan came by, shots of Night Train would be .50 as long as the caravan was running by the resturant.
Wacky.

UNION-TRIBUNE BREAKING NEWS TEAM

4:37 p.m. June 26, 2008

NANCEE E. LEWIS / Union-Tribune
Bartender Jerry Granquist talks to S.D. Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque at the burned-out Kansas City Barbeque.
SAN DIEGO – A fire that started in an open cooking pit Thursday at Kansas City Barbeque gutted the landmark Marina area eatery, known for being in the 1986 Tom Cruise movie “Top Gun.”

The fire broke out about 2:15 p.m. in the restaurant on West Market Street, located across the street from the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel towers and near Seaport Village. It initially created so much smoke that clouds of it could be seen billowing behind Petco Park, where the Padres were playing an afternoon baseball game.

A restaurant cook told firefighters the blaze flared up from inside the cooking pit and spread to the rest of the restaurant's interior, despite his efforts to put it out.

A force of six engine companies and two truck companies, 45 firefighters in all, managed to keep the blaze from spreading to an adjoining office building and had the fire knocked down in about 20 minutes.

But there was no saving the restaurant.

“It's gutted,” said Maurice Luque, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman. “It's destroyed.”

The restaurant, which serves food such as barbecue ribs and chicken, was used for a bar scene in “Top Gun” where Cruise crooned to love target Kelly McGillis, and a sign in the restaurant noted that the jet jockey movie's “sleazy bar scene” was filmed there.

Luque estimated damage at $250,000 to the structure and $150,000 to the contents, not including the cost of decades of memorabilia, including photographs and props from the film. Dozens of Navy caps and license plates hung on walls and ceilings.

Firefighters found Navy flight helmets inside the dining area – melted.

“It must've been a very intense fire,” Luque said. “You can see where the fire swirled around, then just took everything out.”

No one was injured. The only people inside at the time were five employees, including the cook. A few patrons were sitting on the patio outside; they quickly fled as the flames ravaged the interior.

Another cook, Charles Ryan, 53, was taking a break outside when he saw the smoke billowing out the front door. But he wasn't alarmed – yet.

“I've seen pit fires before. They're manageable,” said Ryan, who has worked at the restaurant for about six years. “Normally, you can put these things out; I've had a few of them myself. There's a hose right next to the pit.”

This time, however, the fire couldn't be contained. In the seconds it took Ryan to re-enter the establishment, “the whole kitchen was on fire and it was spreading out into the dining area,” he said.

Sandra Angelo, a magazine columnist and author, lives across the street from the restaurant on the 12th floor of City Front Terrace, a condominium complex.

She said her unit has a 280-degree view of downtown and San Diego Bay, and she was working at home typing a book when she saw smoke coming out of the chimney in the middle of the restaurant. She said it then got a little thicker, and “I just thought they were being a little enthusiastic with their barbecuing.”

But within minutes, she said the smoke became very thick.

“It was just tons and tons of smoke,” she said, adding that it was “billowing out of every single window” and was as high as a nearby 40-story building.

Railroad tracks used by the San Diego trolley and the Coaster commuter train run right behind the back of the restaurant. Had there been a freight train going by, it would have taken firefighters an extra 12 to 15 minutes to put the blaze out, Luque said.

Rob Schupp, a spokesman for Metropolitan Transit District, said trolley service in the area was stopped for about 10 minutes while the fire was extinguished.

But what about the children?

How do you feel about Pluto's recent demotion? Should it still be a planet?

View other answers

I'll tell ya, and I'm not ashamed to admit this, I was deeply offended when Pluto got demoted. I was morally offended, and I'm not a space and science whiz at all. But we were always taught, 9 planets, Pluto being one of them. That's what we've known for our entire lives. You can't just say, "Oh, we changed our minds, Pluto isn't a Planet anymore".
It's like it's not good enough, anymore!

And yes, it should still be a planet.
